Mobilis Emergency Management Information System: ALERTSM-EMIS: Alerts

mobilisentry ALERTS is an instant tsunami warning system. As your 24/7 Tsunami Sentinel, ALERTS saves lives.

Overview

  • ALERTS is an Automated Live Emergency Response Telecommunications System.
  • ALERTS is a 24 hour sentinel constantly monitoring for seismic data.
  • ALERTS is a communications system designed to find and advise key people of vital information as it happens
  • ALERTS is designed to make every second count towards saving lives.

How does ALERTS work?

mobilisentry ALERTS Architecture
  • ALERTS is triggered by the data streaming from earthquake sensors at the time of an earthquake. The sensitivity level is programmed into ALERTS to respond only to key triggers which identify a significant earthquake likely to cause a Tsunami.
  • ALERTS analyses the data and compares it to information in its databank on all the historical earthquakes in the region.
  • Recognition of key indicators allows ALERTS to instantly identify the profile of the earthquake and provide the likelihood of a Tsunami being created. (In some cases ALERTS will advise there is no likely threat which means peoples lives are not disrupted by unnecessary warnings).
  • Alerts also measures the signals to determine the distance of origin of the earthquake. This allows ALERTS to estimate the time the Tsunami will take to strike land.
  • ALERTS then notifies the key people and provides them with the information required to activate an evacuation alert.
  • Every second saved in identifying the threat is a second more to save a life.

Background - A Samoan Tragedy

  • 10 minutes can be 100 lifetimes
  • ALERTS was already a concept being discussed at Mobilis when the lethal Tsunami struck the South Coast of Samoa at 7.00am on Sept 29, 2009.
  • The Tsunami was triggered by the world's largest earthquake in 2009 from the Tonga trench about 10 minutes before.
  • The impact and effect was felt in all the surrounding countries.
  • In Samoa, major tourist regions were completely and utterly destroyed.
  • 147 people did not manage to escape the Tsunami that hit without warning. Additional loss of life occurred in American Samoa and Tonga.
  • The blessing of the disaster was that it did not happen at night or the death toll in all the affected countries would have been significantly higher.
  • With one of the Mobilis team living in Samoa (and experiencing the event first hand), this disaster prompted urgent action to move ALERTS from concept to reality.
